Obverse description Bare-headed bust of King Æthelred II facing left, rendered in the characteristic late Anglo-Saxon style with schematised hair rendered as a series of radiating lines and pellets, and a draped shoulder visible at the bust truncation. The effigy is boldly struck with a prominent eye rendered as a pellet within a raised annulet. A beaded inner circle frames the central effigy, with the royal Latin legend disposed around the periphery of the flan between the beaded borders.
