Obverse description Diademed bust of King Æthelred II facing left, rendered in profile in the characteristic late Anglo-Saxon hammered style. Three pellets appear in the field before the face, occasionally linked to the shoulder by curved lines. The effigy is set within a beaded inner circle, with the royal legend disposed around the periphery in Latin characters. The overall style reflects the early phase of Æthelred II's coinage, before the more elaborate portrait types of his later reign.
