Additional information

Floris V of Holland struck these small silver pennies during a period of aggressive territorial expansion — he was actively consolidating control over Zeeland and pressing claims against the Bishop of Utrecht simultaneously. The "kopje" type takes its informal name from the small head design, distinguishing it within his broader denarius output. Floris was murdered in 1296 by a coalition of Flemish and English-backed nobles, making the full arc of his coinage politically inseparable from the feudal rivalries that eventually killed him.
