Godfrey of Rhenen held the see of Utrecht from 1156 until his death in 1178, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the Duchy of Guelders over territorial rights along the IJssel. Penningen of this type circulated in the fragmented monetary zone between the Rhine and the Zuiderzee, where episcopal minting rights were frequently contested by secular lords. The van der Chijs reference captures two die variants under this single type, suggesting production across more than one minting episode during the episcopate.
