Bernold became bishop of Utrecht in 1027 under the direct patronage of Emperor Conrad II, and his episcopate saw Utrecht emerge as one of the more aggressive minting authorities in the Low Countries. This penning belongs to the Carolingian-derived coinage tradition that Bernold's mint continued well past the point where most Rhenish and Flemish authorities had moved on — a deliberate conservatism that makes precise dating within his reign difficult.
The Ilisch NL1 classification places this firmly within the Utrecht regional series rather than any imperial issue struck in his name, distinguishing it from superficially similar types.
