Ansfried served as Bishop of Utrecht from 995 until his death in 1010, having previously been a prominent military commander under Emperor Otto III — an unusual trajectory that left its mark on his administration of the see. His episcopate coincided with a period of active Ottonian consolidation in the Low Countries, and his coinage drew on the imperial minting privileges granted to Utrecht's bishops, which had been accumulating since the mid-tenth century. The penning type associated with his reign is among the thinner and more irregularly produced issues from the Utrecht series, reflecting workshop conditions more than any deliberate debasement.
