Pedro IV's reign over Portugal lasted roughly two months in 1826 before he abdicated in favor of his daughter Maria, making this one of the shortest-reigned monarchs to appear on Portuguese coinage. The peça denomination — equivalent to 6,400 réis — was the prestige gold issue of the Portuguese monetary system, and pieces struck under Pedro carry that abdication window as a hard date boundary. The 1828 terminus reflects continued striking under his nominal authority during the regency crisis, before Miguel I seized power and declared himself absolute king.
