Purnaiya served as Dewan of Mysore under the infant Krishnaraja Wadiyar III following the death of Tipu Sultan at Seringapatam in 1799, effectively administering the restored Hindu kingdom under British supervision. This tiny fractional issue belongs to the coinage he authorized during that regency period — a silver denomination so small it represents the lower practical limit of hand-struck coinage, intended for the most granular transactions in local bazaar trade.
