| Obverse description | Central depiction of the 'Golden Eagle 1931' gold nugget in high relief, rendered in fine detail against a radially striated sunburst field. The nugget's name and discovery year appear in small lettering immediately below the central device. The circular legend 'THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1/4 OZ. | Additional information |
The Australian Nugget series launched in 1986 as Perth Mint's direct challenge to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in the bullion coin market. These pattern and trial pieces preceded the official release and were used to test reverse dies before committing to full production runs — the 25-dollar quarter-ounce denomination being the smallest in the original four-coin set.
Reverse trials of this type rarely left the mint through official channels.
