Brussels struck this patard during the city's open defiance of Maximilian of Habsburg, who had been seized and briefly imprisoned by Ghent in early 1488 — an episode that threw the Low Countries into prolonged disorder. The Flemish cities, Brussels among them, took advantage of the regency crisis to assert municipal authority, and independent civic coinage was one direct expression of that defiance. Maximilian, once released and backed by Imperial force, crushed the revolt by 1489, making the window for this issue extremely narrow.
