| Reverse description | Reverse displays a boldly struck equal-armed cross occupying the central field, a standard type for Avignon papal coinage of the seventeenth century. The cross arms are broad and plain, consistent with the simplified die engraving typical of small hammered copper denominations. Surrounding the cross, the circular legend reads S PETRVS ET PAVLVS AVEN, invoking Saints Peter and Paul as patrons of the Avignon mint. The lettering, while partially weak at the periphery due to the irregular flan, remains largely identifiable. The plain edge and irregular flan outline reflect the hand-hammered production method employed at the Avignon Mint during this issue. |
