The cross is adorned with flint steels and fire-striking irons from the Order of the Golden Fleece, interspersed with foliate and floral sprays in the angles. A royal crown surmounts the cross at center. The peripheral legend in Latin reads in raised relief within a beaded inner border, identifying Philip IV as King of Spain and the Indies. Piedfort production in the Spanish Netherlands was almost exclusively a presentation exercise — these triple-weight strikes were made for gifting to dignitaries, court officials, and foreign ambassadors as demonstrations of minting capability rather than monetary instruments. The Brabant mint under Philip IV operated during one of the most financially strained periods of Habsburg rule, when the Eighty Years' War was bleeding the treasury and ordinary patagon production was being closely monitored for silver content. A triple piedfort from this context is a deliberate paradox: extraordinary expenditure on a prestige object issued by an administration perpetually short of coin.
