Additional information

Maria II's claim to the Portuguese throne was itself the product of a dynastic civil war — her father Pedro IV abdicated Brazil, sailed to the Azores with a liberal exile force, and defeated his absolutist brother Miguel in 1833, the very year this coin was struck. The Pataco was issued under emergency circumstances, with the liberal government desperate to establish functional currency as it consolidated control of the mainland.

The Gomes references M2 07 and M2 08 indicate two distinct varieties for this single year, differentiated by die details that collectors continue to attribute through edge and field characteristics.
