Reverse description The large numeral '40', denoting the face value of forty réis, is prominently displayed in the centre of the field, enclosed within an open wreath composed of oak and olive branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow. Quatrefoil ornaments punctuate the outer legend, which reads PUBLICÆ UTILITATI — 'for the public utility' — separated by small floral stops, with the date appearing at the base of the coin between two dot stops. The legend and date together encircle the wreath in a clean, uncluttered arrangement typical of liberal-era Portuguese coinage. The coin illustrated bears the date 1833.
