| Reverse description | Central type featuring a large heraldic cross pattee or plain cross occupying the majority of the field, boldly struck in low relief with rudimentary detail consistent with small-denomination hammered billon coinage from the County of Provence. The surrounding circular legend in uncial Latin reads SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDIT, an abbreviated invocation of the biblical phrase 'Sit nomen Domini benedictum' (Blessed be the name of the Lord), a standard pious legend on French royal petty coinage of the early 16th century. The flan is irregular in outline with characteristic edge irregularities from the hammering process. The field is flat and unadorned beyond the central cross motif. A beaded or rope inner border partially frames the legend. |
