Shapur II ascended to the Sasanian throne before his birth — the nobles, anticipating a male heir, crowned the womb of his mother, making him the only ruler in recorded history crowned in utero. He would go on to reign for 70 years, the longest of any Sasanian king. The pashiz denomination in bronze circulated at the fractional end of the monetary system, and bronze issues from his earliest regnal years are substantially underrepresented in reference literature — Göbl's corpus documents only the drachm series for this die pairing, leaving the bronze coinage effectively uncatalogued in the major references.
