Yusuf ibn 'Umar al-Thaqafi governed Iraq and the eastern provinces for the Umayyad Caliphate from 738 until his removal by Marwan II in 744 — a tenure defined by ruthless tax extraction and the brutal execution of his predecessor, Khalid al-Qasri, whom he personally tortured to death. Arab-Sasanian copper fals of this governorship continued the transitional monetary practice of adapting pre-Islamic Sasanian coin types for Umayyad fiscal use, a pragmatic accommodation to entrenched local commercial habits in Iraq and Khurasan. Yusuf was himself executed shortly after his removal from office, in 745.
