The Arab-Sasanian coinage tradition persisted deep into Abbasid rule as local governors struck copper fals for regional circulation long after the caliphate had standardized its silver dirham coinage. Shurayk ibn Shadhi governed the eastern provinces under al-Mahdi, and these issues reflect a transitional monetary moment — Sasanian flans and compositional conventions still in use, Abbasid administrative authority stamped over them.
