The circular Latin legend CRVS·CRISTI·RED·NOST — an abbreviation of Crux Christi Redemptio Nostra, meaning 'The Cross of Christ our Redemption' — runs along the outer margin. The strike is characteristic of hammered billon production, with slight weakness and an irregular flan typical of this minor feudal denomination. |

Rodolfo Gonzaga received the lordship of Castiglione delle Stiviere as a cadet branch concession, one of several territorial splinterings of Gonzaga authority across the Mantuan sphere during the sixteenth century. His signoria was modest enough that his coinage — billon issues like this parpagliola — served a purely local transactional function, circulating within a territory of little strategic weight. Rodolfo died in 1593 without male heirs, and the lordship passed to his brother Luigi, who would later be canonized.
