| Obverse description | The enthroned effigy of King Philippe VI of France, facing front within an ornate Gothic canopied throne (baldachin), crowned with a fleur-de-lis crown, holding the royal scepter in his right hand and the Hand of Justice in his left, his feet resting upon two recumbent lions in the lower field. The design is executed in the refined Gothic style characteristic of early Valois royal coinage. The surrounding legend reads + PHILIPPVS: DEI: GRA: FRANCORVM: REX, identifying the king by name and his divine right of rule. |
