The tughra is enclosed within a circular border, with the accession year 1223 (AH) appearing in the upper field flanking the monogram. The design follows the standard Ottoman epigraphic convention, with no figurative imagery, the entire composition devoted to the imperial cipher executed in the traditional Ottoman calligraphic style. |

Mahmud II came to power in 1808 through one of the more violent transitions in late Ottoman history — Mustafa IV was deposed, Selim III murdered to prevent restoration, and Mahmud himself survived only by hiding among palace servants. The coinage that followed was issued under a reformist sultan who would spend the next three decades dismantling institutions he considered obstacles, including, eventually, the Janissaries in 1826.
At 0.17g, this denomination was already near the practical floor of silver coinage, a reflection of the sustained debasement that had hollowed out Ottoman small change across the eighteenth century.
