In the exergue below the ground line, two serpents are depicted entwined or facing one another. A fleur-de-lis ornament appears above the unicorn at the top of the field. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads VIRTVS SECVRITATEM PARIT, meaning 'Virtue begets security', a motto emblematic of Pier Luigi Farnese's rule.
