Rewa's copper coinage of this period circulated under Jai Singh Deo against a backdrop of the state's uneasy accommodation with expanding British paramountcy — the 1812 treaty with the East India Company nominally guaranteed Rewa's internal sovereignty while steadily eroding it in practice. Local copper issues like this paisa continued to serve everyday transactions long after silver coinage increasingly reflected British influence, making the copper series the last genuinely autonomous monetary expression of the Baghela rulers.
