The 1660 eight-ducat piece from Gdańsk arrives at a precise historical hinge: the city struck it the same year the Treaty of Oliva was signed just outside its walls, ending the decade-long Second Northern War and confirming Polish sovereignty over the region — at least for the time being. Gdańsk retained the unusual privilege of minting its own gold in large denominations, a right fiercely defended by the city council against repeated royal encroachments throughout the seventeenth century.
Kopicki 1775 is among the rarer citations in the Gdańsk gold series. These multiple-ducat presentation pieces were struck in very limited numbers, intended for diplomatic gifts and patrician ceremony rather than trade.
