Orontes held the satrapy of Mysia under Persian suzerainty but spent much of his tenure in open or covert revolt against the Achaemenid crown. He was a central figure in the Revolt of the Satraps during the 360s BC, temporarily aligning with Egypt and Sparta against Artaxerxes II before defecting back at a strategically convenient moment. His survival — and continued authority in the region — was remarkable given how thoroughly that rebellion collapsed around him.
Adramytion, the mint city, sits on the gulf that still bears a derivative of its name. Small bronzes of this type circulated locally and represent one of the few tangible artifacts of Orontes' administrative autonomy in the northwest.
