The Frisian oord was a fractional copper piece issued by the Province of Friesland under the looser monetary authority the Dutch Republic extended to its member provinces in the early seventeenth century. Friesland's copper coinage of this period was chronically overproduced relative to demand, and provincial authorities faced repeated complaints from neighboring provinces about substandard pieces crossing borders and disrupting local exchange rates.
