Osman II came to power at sixteen and within months was minting coinage under his own tughra. His reign lasted just four years before the Janissaries — furious at his plans to restructure the military and draw power away from the corps — strangled him in the Yedikule dungeons in 1622. He was the first Ottoman sultan to be deposed and killed by his own troops.
The onluk denomination itself was a product of decades of debasement, a fraction of the once-substantial akçe coinage that had eroded steadily since the mid-sixteenth century.
