The onluk — literally "ten-er," equal to ten paras — was one of the Ottoman billon denominations that proliferated during the sustained fiscal strain of the late 18th century, when protracted warfare against Russia and Austria repeatedly drained the treasury. Abdülhamid I's reign coincided with the ruinous Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774 and its aftermath, forcing the Porte into currency debasements that pushed silver content in smaller denominations well below half fineness.
Kostantiniyye remained the primary imperial mint throughout this period. The regnal year range on this type reflects the full span of tughra renewal cycles at the mint rather than a single striking event.
