Reverse description The abbreviated ethnic legend RE in large Greek characters occupies the center of the field, with a single pellet set between the two letters, sometimes enclosed within a small circle, serving as a mark of value denoting one onkia. On some specimens the letters appear retrograde. The field is plain and enclosed by a dotted border, consistent with the minimal decorative style typical of small Rhegine bronze fractions of this period.

Additional information

Rhegion, the Greek colony at the toe of Italy, issued bronze fractions in small numbers during the fifth century BC, a period when the city was navigating tense relations with neighboring Lokroi and the broader power struggles of Magna Graecia. The onkia — one-twelfth of an as — represents the lowest practical denomination in the bronze sequence, used for the smallest daily transactions in a busy Straits port.

The Weber and Copenhagen references for this type are consistent, suggesting die links across known specimens are limited. Few examples survive in any condition.
