Additional information

The oncia was Sicily's highest-denomination silver coin, and Carlo III's issues of the early 1730s came during the brief Bourbon interlude before the island was exchanged for Sardinia under the 1738 Treaty of Vienna — Carlo departing to become King of the Two Sicilies and leaving Sicily to the Habsburgs. At 73.84 grams, pieces of this size were struck in very limited numbers and handled more as store-of-value instruments than circulating currency, which is why genuine wear is uncommon but edge knocks and mount damage are not.
