Syracuse's oktobol occupies an awkward denominational position — eight obols, or two-thirds of a drachm — that saw limited use across the Greek world but gained traction in Sicily where local weight standards diverged from Aeginetan and Attic norms. The issue falls within the reign of Hieron II, whose 54-year rule brought unusual monetary stability to a city that had spent much of the previous century cycling through tyrants and democratic upheavals. Hieron's careful neutrality between Rome and Carthage during the First Punic War bought Syracuse precisely the administrative calm required to maintain a coherent silver coinage across decades.
