The original 1628 Speciedaler issued under Christian IV was among the first large silver coins struck specifically for Norway following the establishment of the Kongsberg silver mines — the discovery of native silver at Kongsberg in 1623 fundamentally changed the monetary ambitions of the Danish-Norwegian crown. Norske Myntverk, operating from that same Kongsberg site, issued this replica in 2005 as part of ongoing commemorative programming tied to the mint's historical identity.
