Jaime I's long reign saw Valencia wrested from Almohad control in 1238, and the subsequent monetary reorganization of the new kingdom required a full denomination ladder in billon — of which this obol formed the smallest practical unit. The Valencia mint operated under strict royal privilege, with Jaime himself issuing detailed ordinances governing alloy standards that his own moneyers routinely flouted.
