The obol of Girona belongs to a period when the county functioned as a Carolingian march county, nominally subordinate to the Frankish crown but increasingly autonomous in practice. By the mid-tenth century, the counts of Girona were issuing coinage under their own authority, a reflection of the effective collapse of centralized Carolingian control over the Spanish Marches rather than any formal grant of minting rights.
At 0.15 g, these are among the smallest silver denominations produced in the region, and survivors are frequently found clipped or damaged — a consequence of their marginal bullion value inviting alteration in circulation.
