Obverse description A fleur-de-lis occupies the central field, set within a trilobe (trefoil arch) formed by three cusped lobes, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The spare, heraldic composition is characteristic of the lightweight petty coinage of the Valois monarchy. The royal legend, reading KAROLVS F R (Karolus Francorum Rex), encircles the design between the beaded circle and the outer rim, with variant punctuation depending on the die used.
