Obverse description Central field dominated by a large capital letter E in relief, flanked on the left by an annulus (pellet or ring) and on the right by a cross pattée, all within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, struck in Roman capitals, reads LODOVICVX REX, identifying the issuing monarch Louis VI, King of France. The flan is irregularly shaped, characteristic of hand-struck medieval coinage, with visible die shift and surface porosity consistent with the period.
