Beschrijving voorzijde Central field occupied by the crowned shield of Savoy — a cross argent on gules — surmounted by a ducal coronet. The ducal initials E and F (for Emmanuel-Philibert) flank the shield to the left and right respectively. A five-pointed star appears in the field below the point of the shield, serving as a mintmark or decorative device. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered billon coinage of the Duchy of Savoy in the second half of the sixteenth century, with flat, irregular flan and weak strike typical of the denomination.

Aanvullende informatie

Emmanuel-Philibert recovered his duchy from French occupation only after the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559, having spent years commanding Spanish forces under Philip II in lieu of ruling a territory he barely controlled. The billon small change issued across his reign reflects his broader monetary reform program — he systematically rebuilt Savoyard coinage infrastructure after decades of foreign administration had fragmented it.

The duke shifted his primary mint operations to Chambéry and later Aosta, a deliberate administrative reorientation as he consolidated ducal authority away from foreign-influenced centers.
