Rudolf I's Austrian obol issues of this period reflect an awkward transitional moment: Rudolf had seized the duchy from Otakar II of Bohemia following the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278, and his early coinage there was partly an assertion of legitimate overlordship over territory he had only just won by force. The CNA B 188 type sits within a broader minting program aimed at stabilizing a duchy whose monetary administration had been disrupted by years of conflict between the two rulers.
