Obverse description Central field dominated by a large cross pattée, its arms extending nearly to the inner border, dividing the field into four quarters. The legend RICA RDVS, reading the name of Richard, is distributed across the quarters in bold, deeply struck Gothic-influenced lettering characteristic of Angevin feudal coinage. A small pellet or annulet appears at the center of the cross. The coin is struck on an irregular flan with a slightly uneven border, typical of hammered billon issues of the period.
