This cross design is a hallmark of medieval Catalan billon coinage and serves both an aesthetic and symbolic function. The surrounding Latin legend reads BAQINONA, a contracted form of Barchinonae, identifying the Barcelona mint. The flan edges are characteristically ragged and uneven, consistent with hammered production.
