Surrounding the beaded circle, the royal Latin legend reads clockwise in the outer field, introduced by a cross pattée. The lettering is rendered in the Carolingian epigraphic style typical of ninth-century Aquitanian coinage, with somewhat irregular character forms consistent with hand-cut dies. The overall design follows the standard Carolingian monetary type established under the reforms of Louis the Pious. |
