Obverse description A plain cross pattée occupies the central field, surrounded by a beaded inner circle. The circumferential legend in Latin capital letters reads PIPPINVS REX, introduced by a cross pommée, identifying Pepin as king. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, typical of ninth-century Carolingian hammered silver coinage. The die work is bold but somewhat roughly executed, consistent with provincial Aquitanian mint production of the period.
