Obverse description Central field displays a plain cross enclosed within a raised inner circle, dividing the field into four quadrants. A circular Latin legend encircles the inner ring, reading OTTO INPERATOR, referencing the imperial title of Otto. The lettering is crudely but boldly struck in the Carolingian hammered tradition, with individual letters of varying clarity distributed around the periphery. The flan is irregular and slightly buckled, characteristic of tenth-century Italian hammered coinage.
