| Obverse description | Quartered shield of arms occupying the central field, displaying the Hungarian double cross and the Árpád stripes in alternating quarters, with a raven (the Corvinus emblem) visible in one quarter. The design is rendered in a bold, high-relief style typical of late medieval Hungarian hammered coinage. The irregular flan exhibits characteristic hammer strike marks around the periphery. No surrounding legend is present on this denomination. |

Matthias Corvinus spent much of his reign financing an exceptionally expensive professional army — the Black Army — through aggressive fiscal measures including repeated currency debasements. The obols of his middle period reflect this pressure: silver content declined incrementally across issues, and the ÉH#578 type sits within a sequence of reductions that numismatists can track through die study and metal analysis rather than any official announcement from the royal mint at Buda.
