Louis I — "the Pious" — inherited the entire Frankish empire from Charlemagne in 814 and immediately faced the administrative challenge of maintaining a coherent coinage across territories stretching from the Pyrenees to the Elbe. The Toulouse mint was one of the older Carolingian provincial workshops, its output modest in volume compared to the major northern mints. This obol, the half-denier, circulated primarily in small local transactions where a full denier was too much — grain, tolls, minor market dues.
The 814–818 bracket closes with the co-coronation of Lothair as co-emperor, after which the coinage type was progressively reformed.
