Obverse description Central field occupied by a stylized monogram of Emperor Louis I (Louis the Pious), rendered in the Carolingian monogram tradition with interlaced letterforms radiating from a central point. The monogram is boldly struck in high relief against a flat field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading HLVDOVVICS, identifying the issuing sovereign. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edge, characteristic of early ninth-century hammered coinage.
