Obverse lettering ✠ HLVDOVVICVS
(Translation: Louis.)
Reverse description A plain cross centered within a raised inner circle, occupying the central field of the coin, with the circular Latin mint legend distributed around the periphery within the outer border. The inscription, denoting the Melle mint, is separated from the central cross motif by the inner ring. The lettering displays the characteristic retrograde and Greek-influenced lambda (Λ) in place of a standard 'A', a known feature of Melle mint issues. A cross precedes the legend as an initial mark. The design follows the standard Carolingian type established under Louis the Pious.
