Obverse description A plain cross with splayed arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a raised beaded inner circle. Radiating lines or wedge-shaped elements fill the annular space between the beaded circle and the outer rim, lending a sunburst-like appearance characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. The circular Latin legend HLVDOVVICVS R (King Louis) runs around the periphery of the coin, partially legible due to the irregular flan and variable strike typical of ninth-century Aquitanian issues.
