Louis the Pious was crowned co-emperor by his father Charlemagne in 813, but the Aquitaine coinage bearing his imperial title dates from after Charlemagne's death in January 814 — and specifically this obol type is attributed to the period 818–823, bracketed by the suppression of Bernard of Italy's revolt and the early stirrings of Louis's ill-fated attempts to restructure Carolingian inheritance. Nouchy's localization to the Aquitaine region reflects the administrative continuity Louis maintained there even after assuming the imperial throne, having governed the kingdom since age three under Frankish tutelage.
