Obverse description Central plain cross with a small dot or pellet in each of the four angles formed by the arms, all within a circular legend. The legend HLOTARIVS IMPERATOR runs around the periphery in Latin capitals, identifying the issuer as Emperor Lothair. The design is characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage, with bold, slightly irregular lettering typical of the period. The field is flat and unadorned save for the cross motif.
